Remember we used to rely faithfully on Google Maps to find our way around, then it disappeared from the recent iOS? Personally, I never had problems with this navigation app, but many others did. Consequently, the app has been revamped and newly placed again on the App Store. This new Google Maps has been working very well for most folks. I'm a firm believer in Google products and have promptly placed the app back on my phone.

Google Maps will help you find your way around town and out of town too, has voice navigation with turn-by-turn directions, street view and other helpful features. Not only that, but you can also use it to discover restaurants, shopping other entertainment and other important places. The 360 degree panorama view is really a nice touch. There are definitely more features than in the previous app, and as mentioned, the turn-by-turn voice directions are new and a huge bonus! The map is simple to use, but contains a few not easily noticeable features. For starters, just tap on the icon with two arrows in the bottom left of your display while in street view to pan around the location. Another cool feature is being able to see the special menu that toggles traffic, public transit, and satellite map views by swiping from right to left with two fingers.

Give Google Maps a prominent place on your display, and make sure you get to all your holiday parties and festivities on time using excellent directions!

COOL CONCLUSION: Google Maps is back with a stronger, more feature laden iPhone app with voice guidance that will get you where you need, and provide great entertainment and dining suggestions as well.

As the media has pointed out often enough, there has been quite a shake-up and many discontented rumblings running among iOS fans about the new iOS 6.0 Apple-built maps app which took the place of Google maps. Apple is in the process of remedying this situation so that travelers to Florida don't end up in Alabama and that sort of thing elsewhere in the world!

Personally, I have not suffered one bit from maps although I have only been using it for small errands around town. However, I will add that I have not traveled cross-country nor globally with this app yet. Quick Route by Excited Pixel has produced a fine app that combines many excellent features together to form a nice navigation and maps iPhone app package. Check out the features below:

• Bike, Transit, Walking and Driving directions
• Search for addresses, businesses and other place you can find with Google
• Autoroute directions track where you are and automatically advance when you reach the end of a step
• Autoroute also indicates when you've lost your way and helps you "pull-to-reroute"
• Pull-to-reroute allows you to pull down on the directions panel at anytime to recalculate how to get to you destination
• Schedule when you want to leave or arrive, and select from multiple routing options

The transit directions are quite helpful and cover a range of transportation such as the subway, tube or tram. Quick Route has made it easier than ever for you to navigate through all manner of places keeping a clean and clear display screen. For instance, it provides you with directions which advance when you reach to the end of the previous step. Need re-routing because of a slight hiccup in your driving plans? No problem, Quick Route has you pull down the Title Bar (Directions Panel) to get you safely and swiftly back on track. Since this app is powered by Google Places, you can easily find anything you would search on Google, right here in Quick Route. I particularly like being able to select from multiple routes, and to schedule in advance when I need to leave or arrive at my destination. I would definitely recommend you take a look at this very worthwhile navigation app to enjoy all the features and accuracy it affords you in your travels.

All too soon, autumn winds will be blowing to remind you that an icy winter for those up north will be underway. In Florida, we don't get those frigid temps (most of the time), but whether you are a Floridian or not, why not check out the gorgeous state parks in Florida? Though summer is nearing an end, theoretically we all like to travel whenever possible, whether to get away for a weekend, visit a child in college, or relatives in another state. Travel with a partner or your family is a fairly simple thing, but when you have one or more pets as I do, things can get a mite sticky! Who will keep your pet in your absence, or should you take Fido and MiMi with you?

Knowing the anguish pet parents can feel in wanting the best circumstances for their pets at all times, I did a little reasearch and found PawUV. This easy-to-use app provides you with all the details of pet accommodations in your designated area. Here are some of the features of PawUV that will make travel with your pets simple, enjoyable and stress-free:

- Sort your search by price, Rating, Price and Distance
- A click of a button will connect you to hotel personnel to assist you
- See the photos of the hotel room and facility
- View the Amenities available in the hotel room

Well, whether or not you're into going out on the town, BuzzE Social Networking does a great job of letting you know who's around in your area, and provides all sorts of cool ways to interact with those people. I found so many neat methods of communicating such as chatting, exchanging virtual gifts (my favorite), and playing unique, little interactive games. Some exciting and interactive BuzzE features include:

- Chat with other users from around the corner or around the world.

- Exchange video, audio and pictures!

- Join live conversation streams and talk about music, movies, sports, politics and more with the entire community.

So let's get into how this local Social Networking iPhone app actually works! Once you sign into BuzzE, your opening screen will have tabs at the top - Nearby, Friends and Blocked. The bottom of your display is labeled People, Events, Hot Spots, Alerts and More. Take this time to personalize your Profile. Of course, BuzzE uses GPS to locate you initially so it can search out the area around you. It will list those who are the closest proximity to you who also use this app. Each person has their picture, user ID, while some even have a status listed also. Beneath the user info are several colorful icons denoting chat, virtual gift exchange, play a game, like someone, and buzz a contact (much like a Facebook poke)! The arrow next to the person also scrolls to another screen where you may send pics to your new friend.

A few of the cute gifts that can be exchanged are candy, cake, beer, coffee, and various flowers. Of course, I had to exchange coffee and cake before I could move on to the next activity! One of the neat games I played was Hot Potato where I passed on the virtual vegetable to the next contact. Some other games include I Found You (locate the hidden picture), and How Hot Are We! The Events tab lists stuff that is happening in your area including date and time. You can subscribe to Events and even Sort them by Event Type, Distance and Date depending on your preference. Perhaps, though, the Alerts button is the most important feature because it notifies you as to who has sent a Chat Message, Gift, Buzz, Like, Picture, and Game or Friend Request.

BuzzE contains thousands of listings of great activities going on throughout the U.S. These events may include book clubs, karaoke nights, bar events, coffee houses, a Harry Potter gathering, and yes, even a diaper drive! To make it super easy, the map will pinpoint the location of everything! There is no shortage of unusual and interesting stuff to learn about and do with new friends using this app. Moreover, BuzzE is constantly refreshing itself in all areas so that it can alert you to the newest BuzzEES (as I like to fondly call my group of new friends), as well as current activities.



There's no need to be shy because you can keep your information as private or public as you wish. And, besides, you may also block someone if they are bothering you. In short, it's really simple to navigate around on BuzzE, and get a feel for the people you might want to connect with based on their preferences in all the activities. Connect with a group of fun people who want to be a little part of your life too. And, by the way, don't you just love the bright yellow, buzzing bee icon?

Almost a year ago, I wrote about Vlingo, an intelligent voice recognition app which lets you speak your texts and emails, make various location or other queries on your phone, or even voice dial your contacts. Additionally, one could update Facebook and Twitter accounts by speaking a new status! I have always loved the usefulness and function of Vlingo, but now I thought I'd bring it to your attention again as it has recently upped its features to allow voice to text SMS and email messages free of charge. Previously there was a chunk of change involved if you wanted these two items although the other features were free.

Right now, Vlingo goes a long way towards imitation of Siri for those iOS users without iPhone 4S. Vlingo allows you to enjoy the following helpful voice recognition app features:

- Email: Speak your message, edit it manually if you wish and email it off
- SMS: Speak your text, and edit it manually if you wish.
- Maps: Speak a business name or address to locate and map it using Google maps.
- Social Networking - Update your Twitter and Facebook status by speaking it.
- Search: Speak a name or any question and be answered with a Google, Yahoo! or Bing listing
- Voice Dial: Speak a contact's name to have it automatically appear on your display to be dialed.
- Bluetooth Input: Allows users to record using Bluetooth headset
- Profanity Filtering: Replaces any explicit content with asterisks.
- End Point Detection: Stops the voice recognition process when speech ends.
- Resume Audio: Resumes background audio when recognition requests finish.
- Auto Listen - Vlingo starts listening as soon as app is opened

Everybody has their favorite app, one that sits on their home screen and gets used daily. More than that, this same app probably resides in the multi-tasking tray because you never want to close it! I have a couple such favorites (no I can't narrow it down to just one)! Vlingo , one of my keeper apps, has evolved and improved over time enough to justify its prime spot on my homepage.

Some of my favorite features of this app are the verbal updates to my Twitter and Facebook accounts. But hats off Vlingo to including spoken email and SMS messages free of charge. I had originally paid to have SMS functionality, but am still glad that there is now no charge for email voice recognition. Just be sure to speak your punctuation marks when dictating such as period at the end of a sentence, and comma or question mark where needed. You can't beat the usefulness of voice recognition messages when you just don't feel like typing or even need to send a quick text while out and about. Vlingo is your very own virtual assistant, and gets the job done quickly and efficiently every time. Simply speak to Vlingo and it will help you get more done, faster and easier than before. Try saying "Text John; What's up?" or "Find italian restaurants" or even "Update Facebook."



Let's look at some of Vlingo's awesome features, and how simple spoken commands bring you answers rapidly:

- Voice Dial: "Call Diana!"
- Maps: "Find children furniture stores in Daytona Beach."
- Social Update: Facebook or Twitter, "Really wish it was Friday already!"
- Web Search: "Jamaica vacations"
- Text: "Text Barry - Hey how was work today? Any disasters?"
- Email: "Email Mom - I really missed you this Christmas. Wish you didn't live so far away..."

These are just small examples of the many things you can do with Vlingo. I have my app set to "listening" the minute it opens. Therefore, I simply speak immediately, tap when I am finished talking and use another tap or two to get my correspondence sent. You may include punctuation marks in your dictation actually saying, "question mark", "period", "comma", etc. Also, as a safety precaution you are given the chance to edit your words if they are not exactly right although I found Vlingo to be very accurate in its speech to text translations. Voice-dial comes in handy if you are not in your car using Bluetooth, or do not have a certain contact listed as a Favorite. Moreover, I have updated my Facebook many times with Vlingo. It sure beats typing on the tiny keyboard of my phone, and takes a second to dictate versus a minute to type! Vlingo is an everyday app that is useful as well as very neat to use, and will definitely impress your friends!

I'm sure that several of us are wishing right now that we had iPhone 4S with Siri. Yes, even though there have not been many hardware changes to your iPhone 4, and you've all got iOS 5 free of charge, there is something about Siri that is so appealing! You know, what about trying a similar solution to this well-known personal assistant. I can tell you that I've been using Dragon Go! and really enjoying speaking commands and getting answers (though non verbal). There are many different kinds of questions you can ask with this app, and it won't be your best friend or answer you back, but it's still kind of fun to use. Just speak your question and put Dragon to work for you!

Ask Dragon Go! questions such as: Buy "---- app" and it will take you to the App Store. Ask about books by an author or by title, and the app will direct you to Amazon. Query businesses or companies and you'll be shown Yelp. Check into local events and maps, or use it like I do to inquire into movies in which I am interested. There are so many occasions on which you need to take a head count whether for legal, social or personal reasons. Teachers do this in class every day, sports coaches do the same at games and practices, business meetings need to keep track of attendees, and that is just to name a few occasions. Class Mate does a great job, very easily with no fuss, of keeping track of attendees at any event. It has a simple and efficient interface that allows for entry of one or many classes and its members. Features include configurable classes and member list, session tracking, both check-in and check-out buttons, and a session summary that can be emailed and used in a spreadsheet application.

We've mentioned that using this counter app is very simple. Here's a rough idea of how to use it to your benefit:

1. Tap the Edit button in the upper left hand corner to edit the sample class.
2. Add new classes with the plus button in the upper right.
3. You can select a class using the arrow buttons in the lower middle. There is also a list button that lets you change the order of your classes.
4. Once you have a class selected, you can tap the Class button in the lower left to add class members. You'll need to set up all of your class members before you add a session.
5. The session button in the lower right takes you to the sessions screen. You can view, add, and email a report on all of our session for that class.
6. There are three check boxes for each class member.
In - Class member is present.
Late - Class member is present and was late.
Out - Class member is present and has been checked out of the class.

Don't try to guess or draw with paper and pencil the participant information of your group meeting. It's so much simpler to whip out your iDevice and tap in the numbers needed to keep an accurate account of attendance. It's an uncomplicated process to document participants and session information with this attendance app.

Maybe your kids or partner have some great songs in their iTunes library. You're a bit jealous because you haven't had time to download all the latest songs you want. On the other hand, if they have the music you love, why should you bother download it again anyway? The big word here is "SHARING!" So the question is how do you share and transfer content between multiple iTunes libraries on your home network, and stream from those libraries to your iOS device?

Solution!

It's really not that hard at all to accomplish song sharing with all the helpful features included on iTunes. Here's a brief summary of how to accomplish this feat:

- Open iTunes.
- Select the Home Sharing icon in the left column. (If the Home Sharing icon is not visible, choose Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing from the top menu bar. Once Home Sharing is enabled, the Home icon is no longer visible).
- When prompted, enter your Apple ID account name and password (use the same Apple ID account name when enabling Home Sharing on all computers).
- Click Create Home Share.
- Use the above steps to enable Home Sharing on additional computers on your home network.

You are heading out to a friend's house for dinner. You have the directions from Google Maps, but you would like to know what to expect when you reach the actual neighborhood. Are you in the right place? What exactly does the house look like so you'll recognize it when you drive up?

Solution!
Street View helps solve this little dilemma. Did you know that when you have a complete address in your Contacts, if you tap on it, the name of the Contact will pop up along with a little orange circle with a peg man in it. Tap on the man, and you will be instantly shown the neighborhood with the exact house pinpointed of the friend whom you are going to visit. It's actually amazing to see the house, car and entire neighborhood.

Okay, don't panic. There are a few privacy issues Google has addressed here. First off, they have blurred the license plates of cars, as well as included a Report button if you don't want your home shown. You can rotate your view, and actually walk the street by tapping on the white arrows superimposed on the street with the street name. You can also use this feature directly in Google Maps. Street View is not live, and information probably has been gathered within the past 6 months. So as a friend demonstrated to me, Street View lives right in your Contacts, and not just in the main Google Maps icon!

If you've ever been to a mega mall that contains acres of parking, you know it's very easy to "misplace" where you parked your car. I've been in this situation at amusement parks, offices and malls on occasion where there was just a sea of cars out there! That's where Parkbud comes in so handy. Use this useful app to locate your car, check your parking meter, get directions back to your car, and find parking garages in the area if you need. More than that, Parkbud is built on sleek, modernistic graphics and animations, while being very easy to use and read. Some of the helpful features of this parking utility iPhone app are as follows:

Trade fairs or shows are a major way of bringing new products and services to the attention of the public, and are major marketing events in the life of many companies. Essentially, the trade fair is an exhibition arranged so that businesses can showcase their latest products or services. Usually you'll find demonstrations and samples of their offerings there as well. Trade Fairs may be held for all sorts of items such as Boats, Cars, Agriculture, Electronics, Fashion, Computers, Tourism, and the list goes on! For instance, there will be a Winter Fine Art and Antiques Fair in Birmingham, England at the Olympia building from November 14-21, 2011. (If you are interested in antiques, then you will surely want to attend this event!) I picked up this interesting tidbit of information from Expo World, and if I was able to attend, I'd have plenty of time to get ready for it!

If you are in a specific industry and plan to represent your company and its goods or services, Expo World is an excellent tool to utilize as it will notify you well in advance of upcoming shows. If you plan on attending because you are interested in that product field, Expo World will provide you with a description, time, location and more allowing you to prepare yourself (and your budget) for the big event! In a nutshell, some of the informative features of this trade show iPhone app are as follows:

Open Expo World and enter your selection of Country, City, Category and Year. (In my case, I only used the Country and City fields to see all that was available). Then tap the Search bar to discover the relevant information. (Though plentiful, a few more countries and cities will greatly enhance the benefits of this app). Individual text boxes listing the trade show name, date and logo will appear, and will give you specific information on each expo when you tap them. To continue the example of the Fine Art and Antiques Fair listed above, you are then given EXPO details, Address, Contact info, Exhibitors, Prices, Business hours and the URL for the show. To make life easier, save your preferred shows to the Favorites tab. All the information you need is now in the palm of your hand. Use the Settings tab to change the language of the app to your choice of English, French, Russian. Finally, tap the Update bar to refresh all the show information.

You can start planning your part in the show or delegating colleagues to attend so that you are ready and organized on opening day. The clear, concise interface of this business app makes it so easy to use, with all the information highlighted or compartmentalized in its own category. A smart business associate is one who is well prepared and knows what to expect from the competition. That is why Expo World is so helpful and business savvy.
