One of my perpetual disappointments with iOS udpates is that neither email nor iMessages have password protection. Yes, there is a passcode to gain access to the phone. However, I can't tell you how many people like to view my phone to admire it, or check out the wallpaper or apps. Well, mail and messages sit there in plain view on Home Screen just begging to be read. Since there is no password protection, another option would be to encrypt correspondence of a sensitive nature.

CryptMe takes care of this "free view to all" problem by encrypting specified mail and messages so that they are not visible to others. Just create a profile for your correspondent and then set a password. Once that's accomplished, you can directly send your encrypted messages. You can always edit the specific private profiles if needed. Now to read an encrypted message, mark the message, copy to clipboard and to go to CryptMe. Change to the correct profile and tap "decrypt". Some of the features of this email and messaging iPhone and iPad encryption app are as follows:

• Creation of contacts / friends list with photo and color
• Encrypt any text-messages (E-Mail, SMS, iMessage, etc.)
• E-Mail and SMS connectivity
• Password protection: The app can be PIN-protected from prying eyes

There are enough features in CryptMe to ensure complete privacy in setting up your accounts. As an extra safeguard, you can also safeguard the app itself with a password so that no-one may view your CryptMe profiles. If you choose this option, however, you must enter the code each time you launch the app. You can also lock your device by shaking it and save your history. All these items are available through the Configuration or Settings. Why risk having your privacy invaded when CryptMe faithfully conceals all your sensitive correspondence?

Go ahead and tap the microphone and wait till you see the words Connecting, and Start Recording. Begin speaking into the microphone and when finished, tap the mic again. Now touch the arrow icon at the right top of your screen, and you will see option buttons: Email, SMS & iMessage, Facebook, Twitter and Copy. Use any of these buttons to get your message sent where necessary. Each option will open the corresponding application right then and there to save time for you.

That's just how quick and easy it is to use Voice To Apps! I found the voice recognition iPhone app to be pretty much on target with what I actually spoke, and enjoyed staying within the app to open the various communication targets. When I think about it, I realize how much simpler life has been since using my new assistant, Voice to Apps, to take note of important thoughts and tasks.

Almost a year ago, I wrote about Vlingo, an intelligent voice recognition app which lets you speak your texts and emails, make various location or other queries on your phone, or even voice dial your contacts. Additionally, one could update Facebook and Twitter accounts by speaking a new status! I have always loved the usefulness and function of Vlingo, but now I thought I'd bring it to your attention again as it has recently upped its features to allow voice to text SMS and email messages free of charge. Previously there was a chunk of change involved if you wanted these two items although the other features were free.

Right now, Vlingo goes a long way towards imitation of Siri for those iOS users without iPhone 4S. Vlingo allows you to enjoy the following helpful voice recognition app features:

- Email: Speak your message, edit it manually if you wish and email it off
- SMS: Speak your text, and edit it manually if you wish.
- Maps: Speak a business name or address to locate and map it using Google maps.
- Social Networking - Update your Twitter and Facebook status by speaking it.
- Search: Speak a name or any question and be answered with a Google, Yahoo! or Bing listing
- Voice Dial: Speak a contact's name to have it automatically appear on your display to be dialed.
- Bluetooth Input: Allows users to record using Bluetooth headset

Everybody has their favorite app, one that sits on their home screen and gets used daily. More than that, this same app probably resides in the multi-tasking tray because you never want to close it! I have a couple such favorites (no I can't narrow it down to just one)! Vlingo , one of my keeper apps, has evolved and improved over time enough to justify its prime spot on my homepage.

Some of my favorite features of this app are the verbal updates to my Twitter and Facebook accounts. But hats off Vlingo to including spoken email and SMS messages free of charge. I had originally paid to have SMS functionality, but am still glad that there is now no charge for email voice recognition. Just be sure to speak your punctuation marks when dictating such as period at the end of a sentence, and comma or question mark where needed. You can't beat the usefulness of voice recognition messages when you just don't feel like typing or even need to send a quick text while out and about. Vlingo is your very own virtual assistant, and gets the job done quickly and efficiently every time. Simply speak to Vlingo and it will help you get more done, faster and easier than before. Try saying "Text John; What's up?" or "Find italian restaurants" or even "Update Facebook."



Let's look at some of Vlingo's awesome features, and how simple spoken commands bring you answers rapidly:

- Voice Dial: "Call Diana!"
- Maps: "Find children furniture stores in Daytona Beach."
- Social Update: Facebook or Twitter, "Really wish it was Friday already!"
- Web Search: "Jamaica vacations"
- Text: "Text Barry - Hey how was work today? Any disasters?"
- Email: "Email Mom - I really missed you this Christmas. Wish you didn't live so far away..."

These are just small examples of the many things you can do with Vlingo. I have my app set to "listening" the minute it opens. Therefore, I simply speak immediately, tap when I am finished talking and use another tap or two to get my correspondence sent. You may include punctuation marks in your dictation actually saying, "question mark", "period", "comma", etc. Also, as a safety precaution you are given the chance to edit your words if they are not exactly right although I found Vlingo to be very accurate in its speech to text translations. Voice-dial comes in handy if you are not in your car using Bluetooth, or do not have a certain contact listed as a Favorite. Moreover, I have updated my Facebook many times with Vlingo. It sure beats typing on the tiny keyboard of my phone, and takes a second to dictate versus a minute to type! Vlingo is an everyday app that is useful as well as very neat to use, and will definitely impress your friends!

We have started switching the radio station around at work trying to find hot, new songs rather than listen around the clock to the same top 20. After an entire day in the office, songs that were once my favorite have been so overplayed I almost wish I never had to hear them again!

In any event, I've found some great new songs and have downloaded them to both my iPhone and iPad. Now, here's the gold nugget... The other day, I came across this neat app, Song2Email which lets you email an entire song or multiple songs to friends to share them. This sure beats sending them a link to hear a chunk of the isong only, as is the case with most music services! Now, I'm going straight to my Song2Email app to send the songs I love in their entirety to friends who can enjoy them from start to finish. Let me add, they've been really happy about that! Some of the awesome features of this music sharing app are as follows:

■ Multiple songs can be sent in a single email

■ Works over WiFi or 3G

■ Songs will have all their metadata like song/artist names and cover art left intact

■ Recipients will be able to access the songs on their computers, as well as on mobile devices of all kinds

■ Universal app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad

Honestly, it could not be easier to use Song2Email. Just tap the large musical note icon in the middle of your screen to choose the songs you want to share, tap Done, and an in-app e-mail appears with your song title shown in the subject line. The body of the e-mail informs the recipient that one or more songs are attached. You will see the icon underneath for the song itself with its format shown. Add in your friend's address, tap Send, and off your song goes to be enjoyed by someone else. It's that easy! You can customize a bit by using 3 toggles in the Settings as to whether or not you want the Artist in Song Name displayed, the e-mail Subject or Body Generated. I kept all 3 items toggled On as it only makes my job easier in sending off my songs. As you might imagine, your music can be sent via 3G. However, WiFi is recommended for sending emails with large songs. Sharing your music has never been this easy or fun!

One other great, time-saving feature of this app is that it uses in app email. The email gets queued to the Outbox after you attach and hit Send, and is then sent in the background so as not to disturb your other tasks.

Toddler Email is a unique, educational toddler iPhone app that delights because it imitates the habits of parents who frequently check their email. I'm pretty sure that most adults will check their inbox at least a dozen times a day. Well, you know children soak up your habits like a sponge! Don't you think they are watching you read your email and seeing the pleasure you usually get when doing so? This is what Toddler Email brings to the table - the joy of children opening their own email that is perfectly suited to toddler minds! This educational app combines a modern approach to technology along with simplicity and the familiarity of nursery school rhymes that you grew up with as a child.

In a nutshell, nursery rhyme characters send your child emails with short tasks that absorb and teach them all sorts of new and fun activities. Kids are asked by each character (or Friend) to help them spell, find objects, count and match items. Little ones are all too delighted to get involved with adorable characters in solving these age-appropriate tasks. Let me point out that there are 14 characters (with more on the way), as well as lots of activities and interactions with each. Just a few of the characters include Little Bo Peep, the Muffin Man, Jack B. Nimble and Twinkle Star.

When your little one taps "Login" to Toddler Email, they will be asked to choose a weather symbol for the day which is then displayed in the email header, along with the current time and day, for the duration of play. Every email is randomly generated so that your child can play and replay a single email to their heart's content! Children can view their "Friends" list at any time to see which nursery rhyme characters have sent them emails. When tapped, each character recites aloud his or her corresponding classic rhyme! From that point, move on to opening each of the engaging and special emails! In Toddler Email, your little darlings will enjoy these child-appropriate features shown below:

- Play with 14 popular nursery rhyme characters
- Learn facts as each fun and simple e-mail teaches the basics of spelling, counting and memorization
- Memorize days of the week, and learn about weather and time
- Understand the basics of receiving, opening and closing email

First of all, I thought that the icon itself of Toddler Email was so cute with the happy face poking through the mail, and so I expected more of the same toddler suited stuff within the app. Sure enough, I was not disappointed! Jolly music starts you off as you are asked to tap Login to begin. A list of weather illustrations are displayed. Tap one and you'll hear the oh-so-famous and loved words, "You've got mail!" At this point you can either tap the Friends or Get Email buttons at the bottom of the screen. If you tap the Friends button, you will see all the adorable characters that are included in the app. These are the same nursery rhyme characters that present the mail to your child. Select from well-known friends such as Little Bo Peep, The Muffin Man, Little Piggy, Black Sheep, The Cow, Old King Cole, Old McDonald, A.Sheep, A.Muffin, Mr. Moon, Twinkle Star, Itsy Bitsy Spider, The Mouse and Jack B. Nimble. The characters are all brightly colored and humorously rendered. When you tap each of these Friends, they will recite their profile which is really the appropriate rhyme to fit each. I thought this was a perfect idea and would help familiarize little ones with each character. Perhaps the addition of a song or two would get those little voices singing too!

After reading all these great "profiles", I tapped Get Mail. At this point, I was dying to see what each mail held for me. (Yes, I love mail, whether it's for kids or myself!) I tapped Email from: A. Muffin and was requested to find a similar looking muffin. After tapping all the clouds and discovering various, luscious looking treats, I finally found the match to A. Muffin who spun around and presented himself happily! Simply "X" out of that Email to open another. I tapped mail from Little Piggy and was asked to count how many cute piggies were shown. Tap them one by one and Little Piggy will help you count. Under the group of piggies was a choice of 3 numbers so I tapped the one which corresponded to my final count. I was rewarded with "Great" and "Awesome" acknowledgements. Again, just "X" out of that Email to open yet another toddler surprise. At any time, you may tap the Friends button to play with the characters and hear their nursery rhymes. Other fun tasks include items such as: "I'm hiding, can you find me?", "Can you spell my word?" and "Can you count my items?"

What is notable about this app is that it has blended specific toddler learning with ease into tasks that every young child will feel comfortable completing. Humor, fun, childish voices, bright colors and familiar figures all lend their charm to the unique idea of emails that teach and entertain.

Though I truly enjoy every feature and function of my phone, I often wish it weren't so difficult to type email. It's just that I tend to make a lot of typos with the small screen, hurried fingers, auto correct and all that. Additionally, there are times when I just don't want to type out a long form letter that I already have sitting on my laptop at home (except for the small fact that it is urgent that I send out same correspondence immediately from my present location)! Outbox can really help with all these nagging problems. With it you have pre-made templates in which it is easy to insert a recipient name, other necessary details, and then send the mail merrily on its way in a matter of a minutes.

If you need to have a standard meeting with a client, send a routine letter to a teacher, a note or card to a friend, you can accomplish this quickly and easily with no fuss. Simply fill in the names and essential details, and your email is ready to be delivered in just a few clicks. No need to fumble with your fingers, a small screen, a brain too tired to think, or lack of time. Some of the convenient features of Outbox are as follows:

On the negative side, currently, there is no text editor in Outbox. This means that you are limited to using the templates provided. On the positive side, although I check my email at work, I often do not have time to answer most of it. Yet with Outbox, I can simply choose a form letter (which is, of course, personalized by the time I send it) to reduce correspondence turn-around time to a minimum. This is a simple app, with no fancy features, but it may help you plow through your daily mail and special greetings to friends.
