Reading is one of my greatest hobbies. Going to bed is impossible at night unless I catch up on at least a half hour of my current book. (Then the problem is I don't want to put it down!) Nevertheless, I've spent a great many years plowing through all sorts of books and need a place to record the ones I've read and my thoughts on them in case I want to encourage friends to read (or not read) these same books!

BooksWing is an excellent way to record which books you've read, how much you read in your free time and your perceptions on particular books. It is also a handy method to list the reading material you'd like to enjoy in the future. Throw in the barcode scanner which is part of this app, and you've got an easy way to keep track of your reading habits! Some of the helpful features of this personal book reading list on iPhone are as follows:

- Check the list of the books you're currently reading and how much you've read at a glance
- Keep/Manage/Share your thoughts, quotes, pictures during reading
- Add the books you have on beautiful looking bookshelf
- Keep your wishlist of the books you want
- Add books easily with barcode scan and search

There are excellent, clear instructions which you swipe through on launching the app. Once you tap to Add a book, choose to either Barcode Scan, Search or Manual Add it to your new collection. Your Bookshelf is for books you are reading, or those you'd like to read. The scanner worked quickly and well, loaded the book and then navigated to the first page with a bookmark which can be placed on your current reading page. Tap the speech bubble to add in your thoughts or quotes, then share all of this on Facebook or Twitter.

Take pics of pages you enjoy, records your comments, list the page you're on and see how many are left to go. Rate the book with the star system, and while you're at it, admire the beautiful wood grain bookshelf! I enjoy the classic look to the font used for making notes as well as the complete summary available when tapping the information button. These are all the thoughtful touches available when you use BooksWing.

With warmer temperatures settling in (low 90's in my area!), food tends to spoil quicker - even when placed in the refrigerator. Items left near to the door of fridge get warmer air first and so are more at risk of spoiling. It's important to know expiration dates on your grocery items because you don't want to risk making yourself or your family sick from expired items that may look good still, but really are not.

Fresh Pantry has selected an excellent time in summer to debut, because this app lets you record expiration dates, and place memos on purchased items on your device. And this is all very simply accomplished hardly taking any time, while ensuring the good health of your family! The features of this expiration date list iPhone and iPad app are as follows:

- Snap a pic of your preferred item, food or any item with expiration
- Note the expiration date by turning the wheel to that specific time
- Note a memo, if you wish, on your item (perhaps where you bought, or when)
- Set your notifications ON so that you will be notified when the date arrives

What you'll see is a page of your items organized with thumbnail pics of your grocery or household items. On top of each thumbnail is a number depicting how many days left for that item to expire. When you click on a thumbnail, it will show you the full sized photo and the expiration date you had originally set. You can delete an item once it's expired, of course.



You could use this handy app for many different purposes. What about cleaning solutions, medicines or toiletries, beverages or coupons? I'd even take a pic of any memberships I have and include a pic of the card so I'd always know when it's time to think of renewing! I'll bet you have several uses in mind for being forewarned of expiration dates, whether in food items or otherwise!

We are a very social and high-tech generation. Almost everyone these days has several social network IDs, addresses, phone numbers and perhaps a website. There is a great deal of time and effort used to input all this data into your Contacts list when you need to store a business acquaintance, friend or family member's information. Do you really want to type this one letter at a time into your device?

I have made my own winq (or barcode) for my social networks and other contact info. Once your own winq is created you can easily share it. Have a friend or new acquaintance scan your winq with his phone, or tap Send to mail via in-app e-mail. The winq will be saved in the Photo Library. To Accept a winq, simply go to this Library and select a winq. Tap on the Address Book shown to insert this winq (information) into your Contacts. You can also immediately access your friend's social networks, or data entered into other fields by tapping the icon next to it. Winqs are a real time saver especially because they can read any QR-code available, which has just made your life a whole lot easier!

TODAY'S TIP: SPOTLIGHT SEARCH RESULTS- iOS5 

Question?

Perhaps you've been looking for a specific Voice Memo, Note or Mail, and so naturally you search for it using Spotlight Search (search function when you swipe to the left from your Home Screen). You will find on your display, loads of results covering all items on your phone, and it will take way too long to scroll through each to find the one you need. How do you speed up this search process?

Solution!

- Your iPhone is so easy to customize in many ways. So if you tend to use your Voice Memos more than anything else, for example, you will want to have those search results shown first when you use Spotlight Search. To arrange the order of results, go to: Settings, General, Spotlight Search where you will see all the categories of items on your phone. These include: Applications, Events, Contacts, Notes, Music, Videos, Audiobooks, Reminders, Voice Memos, Mail, Messages and Podcasts.

You can change the order above simply by tapping and holding the 3-line movable icon to the right of the category, and dragging it to your preferred position. Repeat the same steps to move the order of other functions which you may search the most. Tap and drag Mail to the top of the display or put it in 2nd place, if you wish. In this way, when you actually use your device's Search feature, the items displayed will be in the exact order in which you've customized them on the Settings page!

Movies on the big screen, DVD, Blu Ray or your TV are always a great entertainment source, particularly when you are enjoying them with a friend. The problem is that there are so many genres, actors, ratings and differentiating characteristics, it is often hard to pick a movie that suits your tastes perfectly. You hate to spend big bucks at the theater for a movie that didn't transport you to faraway places with its excellence. You need a method to weed through the chaff and find exactly the type of movie you want to spend a couple hours watching.

Discovr Movies helps sift through the amazing multitude of movies that are available by being interactive and using your input and tastes to narrow the choices (sort of like Pandora). Discovr Movies is really simple to navigate. To find your way around the plethora of movies from the past, present and future in this iPhone movie review app, simply:

- Single tap to see similar movies.
- Double tap to see movie details
- Tap & Hold for more options.

First of all, Discovr Movies is similar to Discovr Music in that you tap on a movie to see it "blooming" and displaying types or "buds" of similar movies. In this way, I like to explain away the Discovr apps technique as "blooming ideas", while other folks see the these apps with their discoverable content as "spokes on a wheel".

In any case, tap your way through movies that interest you only to discover similar movies. Check out what's Trending and in Cinemas currently. When you find a movie that looks interesting, view the Synopsis, Cast, Clips, Reviews and helpful Links. Share all this great info with friends via Facebook, Twitter or email, and mark your Favorites too. See what Rotten Tomatoes has to say about the movies that intrigue you. It's amazing how one great movie will lead to another!

There are certainly many worthwhile features to Keeper. However, be aware that only some are offered in the free version while the rest are given in the paid version which is basically a top-in app purchase. Here's a summary of the differences between the two:

* After 30 days, your free trial of Keeper Backup will expire. You will still be able to use the free version of Keeper on your mobile device which will allow you to enter, access and store all of your private information on your mobile device BUT you will not be able to use the following premium features:
Cloud Backup, Multi-Device Sync, Data Restore and Live Customer Support.
To use these premium features of Keeper beyond the free-trial period, you can purchase the full version for only $9.99 per year.

I think using the this free version is satisfactory enough for me. I don't feel I need any of the Premium features, although multi-device sync and Cloud backup may be nice. I've noticed some people prefer password apps that back up to the web, while others rather not have any sensitive information on the web and rather store this stuff only on their device which is exactly what Keeper Password does. This utility app does a fine job of easily tracking your passwords and other sensitive data so that it is easily available to you.

Whether you live in a small apartment or a large house, keeping track of all your stuff can be difficult at best. If you have tools or art supplies, they could be buried in a garage, attic or under the bed. Heirlooms, souvenirs and knickknacks may be stored in boxes somewhere out of sight. Items & Storage & Inventory Lite helps keep you in the know of where your treasures are stored. Your items are listed by quantity and location in order of hierarchy. If you love to swap your items with neighbors, and then wonder where they disappeared, with Items & Storage, you will be able to make note of these very same things. Some of the useful features of this iPhone home inventory app are as follows:

- Catalog items: household objects, tools, goods, documents, collections, etc. with no limit on how many item categories can be entered. Each new object can be given a name, description, picture and quantity.

- Associate items to the categories you choose: clothes, computer hardware, files, tools, materials, etc.

- Make note of borrowed items: register the information (person, date) related to such transactions.

- Retrieve stored items easily: associate them with a storing place such as room, piece of furniture, drawer, suitcase, etc. Storing places can be organized on several hierarchical levels, like living room / cupboard / shelf / casket for example.

It would be really difficult to lose or misplace an item after utilizing the comprehensive options offered in Items & Storage. Having a hierarchy is a wonderful idea for listing items that may be in the box on the 3rd shelf of your bedroom closet, for example. Having the option to track what is lent out of the house is helpful as I have misplaced several items that way. I could see this app being very handy when moving into a new residence, and trying to put personal possessions away as quickly as possible. In such an event, it is easy to lose track of where you have placed an item. The Overview display tells you all the storage and other facts you need to know in a neat synopsis. Most importantly, being able to use this data on the PC via Export is useful for saving your valuable information to hard-drive. Know where your stuff is at all times!

We are a very social and high-tech generation. Almost everyone these days has several social network IDs, addresses and perhaps a website. That's in addition to basic information such as address, phones, etc. There is a great deal of time and effort used to input all this data into your Contacts list when you need to store a business acquaintance, friend or family member's information. Do you really want to type this one letter at a time into your device?

Then I learned about Winq which takes a big job and makes it incredibly simple! Winq is a QR-code (or type of bar code) which when scanned yields all the information that has been entered into it. And, by the way, did you know QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response? Because that's exactly the function of these codes - to enable instant action accessing data. A QR-code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. Barcode readers or camera phones can read the data embedded in this pattern. That's all there is to it! Rather magical, actually!

For example, I have made my own winq (or barcode) with several of my social networks and other contact info. That winq can now be scanned by someone who will insert this information into their Address Book, or I can simply mail the winq to whomoever I please. Quite frankly, it is a snap to share your contact info once your winq is set up. But the icing on the cake is then using one tap to access your friends' networks from their winq barcode which you have saved on your device. So what do you think - do you really need to exchange paper business cards any more? In my mind, I am happy to be done with storing and often losing these cards. My winqs are all I need to be connected to colleagues and friends. Here's how to use this awesome QR-code, social networking app.

Open the app, and you will be prompted to use the Tutorial to learn the few, easy steps involved in making a winq. You will also see a file cabinet drawer with 3 folders labeled My winqs, Make a winq and Accept a winq. If you don't read the tutorial immediately, you will find it very easily at the bottom of your screen under the Support tab. Tap Make a winq and name it. Tap Add Details (top left) button to insert the fields you want included. You may choose details including Name, E-mail, Address, Phone, Middle Name, Web page, Mobile phone, Work phone, Home fax, Work fax, Organization, Job title, Work address, Home address, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Skype, Google Talk, AIM, MSN and Note. Add or delete fields using the Edit (top right) button.



Once your own winq is created you can easily share it. Have a friend or new acquaintance scan your winq with his phone, or tap Send to mail via in-app e-mail. (One caveat, however, is that this 0.9 version of Winq is equipped to decode only QR-codes with contact information in Mecard standard. An update to support other QR codes will soon be on its way). The winq will be saved in the Photo Library. To Accept a winq, simply go to this Library and select a winq. Tap on the Address Book shown to insert this winq (information) into your Contacts. You can also immediately access your friend's social networks, or data entered into other fields by tapping the icon next to it.

Making and accepting winqs is easy, quick, and so much fun. Think about the convenience while out one day and meeting someone with whom you'd like to keep in touch. Have them scan your winq with their phone. If they have their own winq, you can grab theirs. (The good news is that winqs will soon be able to be taken directly from the Contacts list!) This high-tech app is great for parents who make new friends while out on the ball field, for business associates, for a night out on the town, for teachers who may want to share certain communication data, and so forth. Open up your social networking life with Winq, because with the wink of your eye you have contact info of those you choose listed in one small QR-code!
