CryptMe - Crypt Messages

One of my perpetual disappointments with iOS udpates is that neither email nor iMessages have password protection. Yes, there is a passcode to gain access to the phone. However, I can't tell you how many people like to view my phone to admire it, or check out the wallpaper or apps. Well, mail and messages sit there in plain view on Home Screen just begging to be read. Since there is no password protection, another option would be to encrypt correspondence of a sensitive nature.

CryptMe takes care of this "free view to all" problem by encrypting specified mail and messages so that they are not visible to others. Just create a profile for your correspondent and then set a password. Once that's accomplished, you can directly send your encrypted messages. You can always edit the specific private profiles if needed. Now to read an encrypted message, mark the message, copy to clipboard and to go to CryptMe. Change to the correct profile and tap "decrypt". Some of the features of this email and messaging iPhone and iPad encryption app are as follows:

• Creation of contacts / friends list with photo and color
• Encrypt any text-messages (E-Mail, SMS, iMessage, etc.)
• E-Mail and SMS connectivity
• Password protection: The app can be PIN-protected from prying eyes
• Lock-Screen/Lock by shaking, or alarm button

There are enough features in CryptMe to ensure complete privacy in setting up your accounts. As an extra safeguard, you can also safeguard the app itself with a password so that no-one may view your CryptMe profiles. If you choose this option, however, you must enter the code each time you launch the app. You can also lock your device by shaking it and save your history. All these items are available through the Configuration or Settings. Why risk having your privacy invaded when CryptMe faithfully conceals all your sensitive correspondence?

COOL CONCLUSION: CryptMe provides the privacy needed for certain friends whose correspondence and messages you don't want readily visible on your device.

Next Messaging

So here's the thing...we all know that driving and texting is wrong, wrong, WRONG! So many horrible accidents, deaths and disfigurements have occurred because of this wrongful activity. Don't take unnecessary risks. If you know you might need to send texts to family or friends regarding known matters, prepare them in advance. Set them up in Next Messaging, then send them out when the app notifies you it's time.

This no-frills, convenient app is simple as can be to use. Just type in the contact (which can be grabbed from address book), add in your message, then schedule a time to send using the date wheel. You'll get a pop-up message asking you to Confirm scheduling this message with a No or Yes option, as well as verification that the text is scheduled. That's all!

Well, one disclaimer here is that Apple does not allow you to tap Send and never see the text again. What will actually happen is that you will get a push notification when your text is ready to be sent at the scheduled time. At that point, you can tap Send and it will be on its way via the native text app.

Three features I'd like to add to this handy app are: the ability to add media into the scheduled message, a larger font, and a chime of some sort when the scheduled text time arrives. Now, you can add photos if you want once your scheduled time has arrived when the native app pops up allowing the option to add pics. However, the actual Next Messaging app does not have an option to add items.

What can you use this convenient iPhone and iPad text messaging reminder app for? Loads of things limited only by your imagination! Remind others about certain items: tell the kids to walk the dog, take the garbage out, bring home an item needed for a school project. Send an "I love you, no matter what..." message to your significant other on certain days. Schedule birthday, anniversary, congratulations or other greetings to loved ones. Hey, you can schedule a text to yourself if necessary! The point is if you are at work and don't want to be caught texting important little notes to the family, or if you are driving but need to remind someone of something, have it all scheduled and ready to go ahead of time!

Another efficient feature of Next Messaging is the sorting of your messages. Just tap the three bars on top left of your display to get a list of your texts which may be sorted by Draft Date or Send Date. You may also re-use these texts by tapping them and changing your message or scheduled date as needed.

Twist

Yesterday's post from an informative blogger taught me about a helpful app that I'd like to share. Since I had to make a long, arduous, nerve-wracking, road-congested trip to Miami today, I welcomed any and all suggestions on how to arrive alive and let people know I'm on my way! (Truth is, Miami is a terrific, vibrant city, but the traffic there is hellish!)

Twist runs along the lines of Google Latitude, Find Friends or numerous other apps which show where your friends are at any given time. What is unique about Twist, however, is the fact that you can set it up to alert your friends or family via text, e-mail and push notification of your time of departure, location during your trip and expected arrival a couple minutes prior to that time. This easily lets people know how your time schedule is running so they can get on with their lives while waiting, and most importantly, it frees you up from the deadly addiction of texting while driving because Twist will notify those waiting. Your friends do not even have to use the Twist app or have an iPhone. Take a look at the helpful features of this navigation, locator, text utility:

☀ Pick destinations by dropping a pin on the map
☀ Send twists to email addresses as well as mobile phones
☀ Twists contain helpful information about your destination, including Street View, Yelp reviews and the weather
☀ Clearer indication when your recipients got notified, and now you can see when they actually viewed your twist
☀ You can now share photos on your twist
☀ Easily reply back to a twist that you're going there too
☀ Ability to clear out old twists and destinations

You'll want to create your twist before you travel. That means you must set up where you are going and whom you want notified (use your contact list if you wish). If you make this trip regularly, save it as a Favorite and use it often. Select if your travel is by car, bus, walk or bike. A super feature here is that you can protect your privacy if you choose. Twist will share with selected folks 3 items: When you leave, Your location en route and When you are close to arrival. So, here's the thing...if you don't want someone to know where you are coming from (one of those twisted secret things!) you can tap that button so it will not disclose that bit of information.

Once you Create and Start your twist, the display will show your route on the map, streetview and weather conditions, share photos, display the people you have selected to receive your twist and show messages which lets you know your auto messages via Twist have been sent and received. How convenient is all that information automated from within one app! Plus, you never have to lift a finger to let friends know where you are or when you'll arrive. Twist is your travel assistant that does an excellent job of informing others without breaching your privacy.

COOL CONCLUSION: Wherever you travel, Twist is an indispensable tool that will automatically and accurately alert your family or friends of your departure, location and arrival so that you can concentrate on driving safely, not on texting your whereabouts!

Tips & Tricks For Your iOS Device - Siri (iMessages & Calendar)

I had planned to hold out for iPhone 5 using my iPhone 4 until then. However, the other day disaster struck when my phone dropped at Best Buy (on the carpet I might add), and the glass shattered completely. I don't know who was more shocked - me or the Best Buy sales rep! Anyway,the next day off I went to Apple and came home with 4S and Siri! What choice did I have after all? Since then, I've been discovering all sorts of secrets about Siri and want to share some with you today. Maybe my discoveries will convince you to try 4S, or perhaps you will learn a trick or two if you have this phone already! Today, let's chat about Siri's integration with iMessages and Calendar native apps.

As you can see by the screenshots above, there are many ways (just a few listed) in which you can ask Siri to perform tasks for you. Plus, Siri can read either your sent messages, or incoming messages (a great plus when you're out and about). Speak naturally as to a person in telling Siri how to respond, and she will compose your message. Or you can start off by saying, "Text (Bob)". Siri will find Bob's contact information, and then ask, "What do you want me to tell Bob?" At that point, you can dictate your text. And the voice recognition is pretty darn good, let me add!

Calendar

Now, here's a bit of information about what Siri can do with your calendar. Tell Siri to move or reschedule meetings. Set up new meetings or calendar dates that are important. Ask Siri to read your schedule for the day. Take a look at these pics below for some ideas. These are just a few of the many calendar functions.

I was skeptical of Siri to begin with, and not sure that all the hoopla was warranted. However, I can tell you now that iPhone 4S really is a great phone, and Siri does a lot more than I had imagined. Other Siri features will be covered in future posts. The prognosis? I am sold on Siri!

Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT

Christmas came and went quicker than the blink of an eye. Today, I've had so many people ask if Santa had treated me well, and I've not come up with a glib and easy answer! Okay, so I didn't get an iPhone 4S (bah humbug!), but I've redoubled my efforts at finding cool apps to take my mind off that sad fact! I found Voxer® while surfing the App Store and was pretty impressed with its neat function of acting as a walkie-talkie. In fact, Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT is a walkie-talkie app whereby you can send instant audio, text, photo and location messages to one or several friends. The interesting thing is that the recipient of your calls may listen to your message instantaneously while you talk (walkie-talkie style), or hear them later in a sort of voice-mail fashion. Some of the features of Voxer are as follows:

- Live walkie-talkie
- Cross Platform Messenger
- Voice, Text, Photos and Location can be added to your messages
- Group chats
- Works over WiFi, 3G and any other data network
- Get notifications for new messages
- Create messages even offline
- Play voice messages
- Connect with Facebook friends

Sign up quickly when you start Voxer. I used my Facebook ID to do this, and the app quickly found friends who used Voxer that were on my Facebook or Contacts list. Tap the menu block icon on the top, right side of your display to see options such as: Find Friends, Start a Group, Invite Friends, Profile, Settings and Support. I found friends and invited several to walkie-talk with me. The Settings button gives options to Share Location, Hold and Talk (a must for me), Sort by First Name or First Name First. Definitely check out the Help section in the Support tab as you will find useful questions and answers located there. Voxer is pretty neat to use for Group talking also and makes it convenient when arranging or meeting at a certain location. I find Voxer particularly helpful in an international setting. For instance, if your friend lives overseas, and you don't want to pay long-distance charges, use this app to make simple conversation with him or her if you don't feel like a full-blown Facetime conversation, or paying for a long distance call.

To talk, just tap the friend's name in your new Voxer list, then tap the Hold and Talk bar at the bottom of your display (be sure to wait a couple seconds before you talk). The message is received instantly by the recipient who can then respond to you by repeating the same steps. Send a Photo, Text or Location when you talk also, if you wish. This 2-way conversation can go on as long as you like. If you are not available to talk, the message will remain in the app for you to check later. The speaker box at the top of your display allows you to use Handset or Speaker, Delete Chat or Mark All Heard. Voxer is definitely an innovative and useful app which can be enjoyed cross-platform with friends at any time, with all voice and conversation messages being free of charge.

Facebook Messenger

It's true rumors abound that Google+ may well surpass Facebook in popularity. Some people have made the social networking switch while others have not. Those who want it all, have kept both items available on their devices. Facebook Messenger is integrated with your Facebook messages and chats, so you can access all your conversations right in the app. Each message you send through Messenger is also saved as part of your ongoing conversations on Facebook.

This app provides options like one-click access to messages through your phone, location mapping and the ability to message friends, groups and mobile contacts. Some of the useful and efficient uses of Facebook Messenger are as follows:

• Message friends, groups of friends or anyone in your mobile contacts
• Map your location, find your friends and make plans on the go
• Get mobile notifications so you never miss a message
• Include photos so friends can see what you're doing

Mobile notifications make sure you never miss a message. Contact friends one on one or start a group conversation with Facebook friends or anyone in your mobile contacts. Location mapping lets you find the people in your conversation, but you can turn off this feature if you are a more private individual. Access all your conversations right in the app since it is Facebook integrated. Name and choose a picture for your group conversations to personalize things just a bit.

FunMail Free Texting

I've been sending out so many texts recently, I felt a need to spice them up a bit, as they were looking rather humdrum. I tried FunMail and got a good laugh at how it took a keyword from my message and created a picture around it. For instance, I wrote: "Remember, guys, Mom is making the soup tonight." Immediately upon tapping Create, FunMail came up with an image of steaming soup to go along with my words. I wrote another, "You need to stop at Walmart on the way home." FunMail then incorporated an image of the Walmart logo into my message. You can't beat that for a little originality and intrigue in your correspondence. Use this app for individual or group messages. Your recipient need not have this app in order to receive and send messages as you are assigned a unique FunMail address. You may use this address or use your phone number as in regular texting. Here are some of the unique features of this free text and picture messaging app:

You can also send FunMail messages to an e-mail address. Just enter that address in the "To" field. Note that messages are limited to 140 characters since the lines become smaller and harder to read otherwise. One thing that could be addressed is getting more relevant pictures to my text. Usually, of the pics that appear only 2 are relevant to the theme of my note. However, the app states that with time and learned behavior, the relevancy will improve. FunMail is quick and easy to use. There is an enormous collection of graphics in the database from which FunMail chooses your image. In fact, 5,000 cool new ones have been added. There are cartoon images, amazing photos, and many graphics that make your texts uniquely yours.
