Frequency

Developer Quote: "Frequency is your personal video service. It puts the entire world of web video at your fingertips."

Many of us are visual people. We understand information more readily from watching and hearing in vivid color and sound, rather than reading in black and white. News can be compacted into a short video thus giving you the gist of a story quickly and clearly without eye strain or boredom. Realizing the many benefits of up-to-the minute, attactive videos, Frequency has created an iPad app delivering a plethora of video news mirroring its web site at frequency.com.

Quite simply, Frequency is a video service which you customize completely to suit your tastes with interesting clips in all areas of life such as entertainment, news, sports, technology and loads more. Additionally, these videos are dished out to you in real time portraying current news. You can even see just how fresh is your news source as the time of delivery is noted on each video thumbnail. After you have enjoyed your sharp and smoothly played video, you may share it with family and friends via Facebook or Twitter, or even mail the link itself. Tap the heart if you loved the clip, or tap the folder if you'd prefer to take a more in-depth look at it later.

Below is a snapshot of the many features of this engrossing video aggregator of news and entertainment iPad app:

• Watch 1,000 channels of online video, or follow your favorite blog as its own video stream
• Stay up to the minute on topics that are trending right now
• Get every video your friends post on Facebook and Twitter
• Quickly access anything you are following in your personalized Tuner
• View a stream of video from all your channels in Your Highlights
• Go full screen or use AirPlay to watch on your TV

Launch Frequency to find a large list of Channels, headed by Frequency Top 25 stories on the left. Swipe down through the channels to find the sources you love and choose to Follow (tap to add to preferred viewing list) on your personalized Tuner on the top of the screen. Alternately, to remove a channel from your Follow list, tap the Unfollow button next to that channel's icon. But, hold on here, these are not the only news channels!

You will see an arrow next to Channels which when tapped will provide you with a Categories list to further help you find exactly the news you seek. In addition to this long list which includes animation, automotive, business, comedy, cyber culture, movies, travel, etc, you will see Featured, Trending and Social videos. The Categories and Channels offerings are quite generous and you are probably going to find there is far more content here than you have time to watch! At any time, you may change your view mode to list or grid. Each video will have a short description underneath reflecting its content.

The Settings icon will allow you to connect with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, in addition to signing in to your Frequency.com account if you already have one. You do not need to open an account in order to begin enjoying this app. However, if you also watch Frequency videos on your computer, then you will notice that this app syncs perfectly with the content there. In Settings, you may also set your Video Quality to either Auto, Low or High.

Some of the outstanding features that have me happily sold on Frequency as my video news collector of choice are: (1) all videos shared by my friends on Facebook, Twitter or YouTube are able to be seen here, (2) re-aligning channels in my customized Tuner is easy by dragging an icon to a new position, (3) using the Smart Channel feature (a collection of my favorite sources) is a cool time saver, (4) adding RSS feeds or video from any website is a super personal touch, and (5) excellent video playback is pure pleasure. As soon as I wrap up this post, I will resume watching the humorous video in top screenshot from "The Onion", one of my favorite channels. Enough said!

COOL CONCLUSION: An enormous collection of captivating, newsworthy and current videos along with a great deal of customization make Frequency the ideal video aggregator for your favorite news sources.

Hunger Games - Girl on Fire

Developer Quote: "From the award-winning creators of indie game sensation Cannabalt comes the *official* FREE teaser game for the movie event of the year — The Hunger Games!"

- COST: Free     - APP STORE STARS: 4
- Categories: Entertainment, Games, Movies, Native, Universal

How many of you went to see the new Hunger Games movie this weekend? Well, this much awaited film drew in millions with its action packed adventure theme. Of course, to keep the excitement going, Lionsgate has created the Hunger Games - Girl on Fire universal iOS app. You will take on the role of none other than Katniss Everdeen, the remarkable heroine who is clever, quick and an amazing shot using her bow and arrow.

The story behind this action packed game is that Katniss dares to go out of her allowed area of District 12 on a food-finding mission. There is never a dull moment, as she runs into a formidable team of Tracker Jacker wasps sent by the cunning Capitol team. Get Katniss home safely using your deadly bow and arrow to to drop the nasty wasps. Obstacles galore on your travels are an expected event, but with patience and skill, you will complete your mission! Some features of this popular action movie game for iPhone and iPad are as follows:

o Guide Katniss's escape with simple touch controls:
- TAP on Tracker Jackers to shoot them down
- SWIPE UP to leap up into the tree tops and avoid enemy fire
- SWIPE DOWN to leap back down to the ground

o Compete for high scores against friends on GameCenter!

Hunger Games - Girl on Fire has many intriguing components to it. First of all, you will find the visuals of a slightly retro style. Though you will face challenges, the controls are easy to maneuver - just tap a target who will be felled using your bow and arrow. It's pretty neat to see Katniss running as the game becomes more engaged with activity. As a special bonus, you can take time out of your game to see additional menu features such as movie trailer, order tickets to the theater and grab a sneak peek of The Hunger Games: Adventures which is an imminent Facebook game.

If you've not seen the movie, nor the previews the last time you went to the theater, here's a bit from the developer on the story of the Hunger Games.

"Every year, the evil Capitol of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. As part of a government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which “Tributes” must fight with one another until one survivor remains. Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts if she’s ever to return home to District 12."

COOL CONCLUSION: Hunger Games - Girl on Fire is an exciting representation of the adventures of the movie, and is also balanced with easily manageable controls, cool graphics and sounds to challenge your mind and reflexes.

Looking for a free movie to watch with your significant other, or when you're home alone one day? You can watch high quality movies on your iOS devices when you use Popcornflix. Easily choose from a wide array of movies in all categories by selecting either New Arrivals, Most Popular, or just simply browse this fun selection. Some of the great features you will find with this free movies for iPhone and iPad app are as follows:

- Movies feature stars like Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Kristin Stewart, Paul Rudd, Charlize Theron, Alec Baldwin, Daniel Craig, etc.
- Watch as many films as you like for free with no limit
- Free to download app and free to watch, no subscription required
- At least one new movie added each and every day

- Browse movies by title, actor, genre, and more
- Add movies to your own queue for viewing at any time
- Create customized Watchlist
- Watch on both 3G and Wi-Fi
- Share movies with friends on Facebook and Twitter

I selected the movie, "Lymelife", to watch on my iPad. There is an ad to watch before the movie begins, but that was no problem to me. (After all, I was able to choose from some awesome free movies). I used the iPad in orientation mode to enlarge the screen because the view does not completely cover the device's display, and I wanted it as large as possible. However, the quality of the movie was flawless, the sound was crystal clear and I did not come across any glitches during its play.

The movie is being streamed as you watch so you can't download it to your device, but the beauty is that you can watch both over 3G and WiFi. Use the scrubber bar at the top of your screen to move the action further along or rewind as you please. Under Genre, find movies such as Action/Thrillers, Comedy, Horror, Drama, Romance, Family/Kids, Urban, Bollywood and more. Use the Search bar to enter the name of a film you'd prefer to see. If you want to add movies to your queue, go ahead and do so then select to either Watch Now or have it stored in your queue. Movies 24/7 at your disposal? I'd say it's definitely worth having on all your devices, especially on trips where you can utilize the 3G for your kids!

COOL CONCLUSION: Enjoy a large assortment of exciting, full-length movies any time via the high-quality streaming of Popcornflix!

Discovr Movies

Developer Quote: "Discovr Movies makes it easy to find a new movie that you'll like."

- COST: 99 cents    - APP STORE STARS: 4-1/2
- Categories: Entertainment, Lifestyle, Lists, Movies, Native, Universal

Movies on the big screen, DVD, Blu Ray or your TV are always a great entertainment source, particularly when you are enjoying them with a friend. The problem is that there are so many genres, actors, ratings and differentiating characteristics, it is often hard to pick a movie that suits your tastes perfectly. You hate to spend big bucks at the theater for a movie that didn't transport you to faraway places with its excellence. You need a method to weed through the chaff and find exactly the type of movie you want to spend a couple hours watching.

Discovr Movies helps sift through the amazing multitude of movies that are available by being interactive and using your input and tastes to narrow the choices (sort of like Pandora). Discovr Movies is really simple to navigate. To find your way around the plethora of movies from the past, present and future in this iPhone movie review app, simply:

- Single tap to see similar movies.
- Double tap to see movie details
- Tap & Hold for more options.

First of all, Discovr Movies is similar to Discovr Music in that you tap on a movie to see it "blooming" and displaying types or "buds" of similar movies. In this way, I like to explain away the Discovr apps technique as "blooming ideas", while other folks see the these apps with their discoverable content as "spokes on a wheel".

In any case, tap your way through movies that interest you only to discover similar movies. Check out what's Trending and in Cinemas currently. When you find a movie that looks interesting, view the Synopsis, Cast, Clips, Reviews and helpful Links. Share all this great info with friends via Facebook, Twitter or email, and mark your Favorites too. See what Rotten Tomatoes has to say about the movies that intrigue you. It's amazing how one great movie will lead to another!

COOL CONCLUSION: "Discovr Movies contains a handy grab-bag of reviews, information and suggestions that will make it easy for you to "discover" movies that strike your fancy!"

Doodle Movie Challenge Pro

Developer Snapshot: "How well do you know movies? Would you know them if they were portrayed by doodle stick figures?"

- COST: $1.99     - RATING: 3 Stars
- Categories: Art, Entertainment, Games, Movies, Native, Trivia

If you are a movie buff and enjoy movies on either the big screen or DVD, you are bound to be current with classic and new movies that everybody has heard about or seen. Additionally, if you enjoy trivia questions that stem from your artistic creations, you'd appreciate a Pictionary game. Doodle Movie Challenge Pro gives you all the fun of movies and drawing to doubly entertain you and provide a bit of humor at the same time. This is good, old Doodle fun where a Doodle notebook is used to display various scenes from movies which you have to name. Some of the entertaining features of Doodle Movie Challenge Pro are as follows:

- 200+ questions with sound effects and background music
- Includes Sudden Death mode try and get as many correct as possible before your time runs out
- Levels mode where each level you need a higher score to get to next level plus bonus rounds
- Auto-saves games when app exits
- Random questions and random answers on every new game started
- Local and World High Scores
- Includes OpenFeint social gaming

Open Doodle Movie Challenge Pro to a crumpled piece of graph paper, and pick your level, options and other settings. It's simple enough to do that before the fun begins. So then a penciled drawing will appear with four choices underneath of possible movies which the drawing represents. I saw a stick man with a role of paper with all sorts of alphabet letters on that paper, and guessed from the choice list that it was Da Vinci Code! Ta da! I was right and moved on to a couple embracing at the foot of the stairs. My guess was Gone With the Wind and I was right again! Be warned these are not all easy questions. Crackle

I rarely get a chance to watch TV more than a couple nights a week. That being said, I have missed so many excellent sitcoms and movies that I feel quite left out when friends are discussing them. Enter Crackle! Crackle is an awesome app that provides you with full-length movies and TV shows in all genres. You can view the list of shows at www.crackle.com or from within the app. The video quality is excellent, and so I have found myself enjoying one too many episodes of Seinfeld! I was pleased also that I did not have to endure any buffering problems. Here are some of the neat features of this TV and movie app:

- Full-length Hollywood movies (Da Vinci Code, Snatch, more)
- Lots of TV show episodes (Seinfeld, Married With Children, more)
- Genres including: action, comedy, crime, horror, thriller and sci-fi
- Optimized for both iPhone/iPod touch and iPad
- Browse Movies, TV, Originals, Collections and Genres - or search by keyword
- Build and manage your queue for viewing on the app or online at Crackle.com.
- Stream HQ video via 3G or Wi-Fi
- New movies and TV episodes added regularly
- Content available only in US, Canada, United Kingdom and Australia while content varies by territory

There are many ways to enjoy the viewing selection on Crackle. Open the app and you will see a slideshow of images from the Featured shows or movies. Tap the arrow under the pic and you'll get info on that show. You may tap Movies to view only those, or Shows. Tap Browse if you want a more comprehensive view (including Movies, Television, Originals, Genres, Collections) of what's on Crackle. Tap More to Search Crackle, Manager User Account, view My Queue, and peruse your Viewing History. The interface is easy to manage with large font for easy reading. This app does turn on GPS, so to prevent this go to your device Settings, Location Services, Crackle and turn off. The only other little grievance is the ads which play before each show. Still for free viewing fun, I can live with that. Crackle is a division of Sony Pictures Entertainment and offers quality movies that you can watch at your leisure.

COOL CONCLUSION: "Crackle is excellent free TV and movie entertainment from the comfort of your home on the iDevice of your choice."
